The Trews Turn The KEE to Bala Into One Big Family Gathering

There are few venues in Ontario that capture the spirit of a summer concert quite like The KEE to Bala, and on July 24, Canadian rock veterans The Trews reminded everyone why they've remained one of the country's most beloved live acts for more than two decades.

Currently touring in support of their 2025 album The Bloody Light, the Antigonish, Nova Scotia quartet continues to celebrate new music while revisiting the songs that helped define Canadian rock. The latest record produced the No. 1 rock radio single "The Breakdown," and this tour showcases both the band's fresh material and their extensive catalogue of fan favourites.

From the moment Colin MacDonald stepped onto the stage, the connection between the band and the packed Bala crowd was undeniable. The Trews have always excelled at making every venue feel intimate, but at The KEE to Bala, that bond felt even stronger. Fans sang every lyric back to the band, creating an atmosphere that was less like a concert and more like a gathering of longtime friends.

The evening featured a healthy mix of classics and newer material, with the audience enthusiastically responding to favourites such as "Not Ready to Go," "Highway of Heroes," and "Hold Me in Your Arms." Whether delivering soaring rock anthems or heartfelt ballads, the band kept the energy flowing from start to finish.

One of the night's most memorable moments came when the band stepped away from the stage to perform an unplugged set in the middle of the crowd. Surrounded by fans on all sides, the acoustic performance erased the barrier between artist and audience, creating a rare and unforgettable experience that perfectly reflected The Trews' reputation for connecting with their fans.

As if that wasn't enough, lead guitarist John-Angus MacDonald took things to another level by leaving the stage during a blistering guitar solo and making his way to the venue's upper balcony. Performing high above the crowd, his surprise appearance drew cheers from every corner of the room as fans rushed to capture the moment.
